The following contains information about the upcoming short story, A Journey’s End. As such you may not wish to read it if you feel it would be spoilery for you. This is part of a series of articles I will be writing as I take an detailed outline approach (“Plan the Trip“) to planning this story.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
Born generations before the Great War, Suki’s birth amazed many of the people in the small village of Pedrayl. Her mother, well past the age of having children, gave birth and survived through the long delivery. Her mother and father not only loved Suki, but also their Lord, known simply as Triune, or Three In One. Her father also led the people of the village as a spiritual elder, of sorts. At 12, Suki’s mother died from a disease, and her father’s love fell completely to her.
Known best for her lust for life and nearly boundless energy, Suki quickly became a village favorite, brightening up nearly everyone’s day. Suki shared her parent’s faith, and like her father, could heal others through divine power. As required of all young villagers, Suki learned self defense, favoring the simplicity and balance offered by the wooden staff. Yet the way words could cut sharper than a sword caught Suki’s interest the most.
People traveled through their village all of the time, as it was a nice place to spend the night when going between larger cities such as Lodloss. Sharing stories, songs and even their cultures, many of the men would tell the villagers of their various faiths. Suki’s father worked hard to share his faith with them as well, and to show them that in a world filled with deities, that only one God stood supreme. Suki learned much, watching and listening carefully to her father. Eventually, she joined him in discussions with visiting theologians and scholars, impressing many well beyond her own years in age. Her father often stated that the Spirit of Triune blessed her with His wisdom, as he sometimes heard her teach wisdom beyond anything he ever shared with her.
Yet, her father knew that she also longed to travel and go outside of their small village. Concerned about the physical and spiritual dangers that Forzega could present to one so young, he repeatedly turned down her requests to go out. Yet, Suki knows that one day, Triune will lead her in a new direction.
