The following contains information about the upcoming short story, A Journey’s End, including information not normally available to readers such as plot twists, future events, etc. As such you may not wish to read it if you feel it would be spoilery for you. This is part of a series of articles I will be writing as I take an detailed outline approach (“Plan the Trip“) to planning this story.
Little is known about Drak’Nor, and he prefers to keep it that way.
A young mean barely in his teenage years, and always dressed in heavy robes, Drak’Nor became a dark mage of the Order of the Shadow while most his age played games and dreamed about girls. The Order of the Shadow, infamous for their secrecy, did not ask Drak’Nor many questions when he applied to become a member. They found out everything they needed to know within 15 minutes after he walked in.
According to their records, Drak’Nor indicated that he originates from a small village near the border between the Land of Man and the Dwarven grounds. At the young age of seven, he woke up one morning to the sound of screams. Orcs swarmed through the village, raping, pillaging and murdering all who got in their way. His mother hid him underneath a pile of blankets in the room right when two orcs broke into their home. Paralyzed with freight, Dark’Nor reported that he watched, helplessly, as they murdered his father in cold blood and violated his mother. They left…and Drak’Nor stood over his mother, powerless, as he watched his mother die from her wounds.
Over the next half decade, the guilt and feeling of helplessness from that moment lived over and over, nearly drove the young man mad. When he heard of an Order that could teach him power to overcome such adversity in the future, he jumped at the chance.
The leaders of the Order sensed Dark’Nor’s fear and desire for revenge. A perfect combination for their needs, they quickly accepted the young man into their fold without future interrogation. Over the next few years, Dark’Nor learned quickly. He apprenticed with some of the most powerful leaders of the Order, and quickly learned what he was taught. His lack of hesitation and ruthlessness in accomplishing any task exceeded even his aptitude, causing many, including his teachers, to fear him. Before he was twenty, Dark’Nor ascended to the rank of second shadow proving himself in mission after mission, including assassinations.
While much more powerful than ever before, Drak’Nor wanted more. He wanted to make sure no one would ever hurt him, the way the orcs killed his parents. Most importantly, Drak’Nor never wanted to feel helplessness and fear like that again. He heard rumors that a wizard more powerful than the First Shadow commanded the armies of chaos. A plan began to form in Drak’Nor’s mind. If he could best this individual, he could force him to give him that power. At the very least, it would prove to Drak’Nor that none were more powerful than he, and therefore, none could challenge him. Getting to this man, through the hordes of orcs, trolls and goblins that served him would prove too difficult a task for Dark’Nor alone. He began to look for opportunities that might allow him to get close.
