The journey of a nerd who loves the Lord

“I have been writing this volume while residing in Germany for a teaching trip. I am humbled by penning these 95 theses in the same country as Martin Luther did many years ago. I submit these to the evangelical church of our day and pray that God would allow anything of truth in these pages to bend and change men’s hearts back to God.” – Greg Gordon –

It is useless for large companies of believers to spend long hours begging God to send revival. Unless we intend to reform we may as well not pray. Unless praying men have the insight and faith to amend their whole way of life to conform to the New Testament pattern there can be no true revival. – A.W. Tozer

I am currently reviewing and commenting on  95 theses to the modern evangelical church “revised”! by Greg Gordon.  The following discusses discipleship and living a separated life.

Thesis 15

There is a lack of true discipleship and making others to be obedient disciples.

Matthew 28:20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

2 Timothy 2:2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.

2 Timothy 2:14 Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.

YouthAflameWhile a teenager, I attended a church in Florida that I remember to this day.  After months in the congregation, they moved many of us into a tennager class.  At first, I felt demoted.  However, the teacher there, Arty, quickly changed my opinion.  Instead of treating us like kids, he planned to disciple us one on one using the book Youth Aflame by Winkie Pratney.

We never did finish that book as a group.  He either quit, or got fired, after a misuderstanding in a Sunday evening church service, if one should believe rumors.  However, I read through the book which blew my mind in many ways.  Here was something that taught about everything from prayer to fasting to bible study to theology….as in one book.  Granted, the Bible does that 🙂  However, this book specifically did it from the angle of becoming a Christian disciple.  I read it many time after his departure.

Back to the point at hand… we lack discipleship in our churches.  We are corralled into large pastor lead sermon services week after week, instead of the one on twelve discipleship model Jesus used.  As a teenager, I was so engaged when Arty brought this to my attention and chose me to work through the discipleship program.  After he left, I quickly fell away.  We need discipleship more than ever.

Thesis 16

The modern day evangelical believes the error that parts of life are to be spiritual while other parts are to be worldly and secular. Rather than our entire life’s being spiritual and our walk with God.

1 Peter 4:2 As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.

Colossians 3:3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

1 John 2:6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

I struggle with this myself, at times, easily falling into the mindset that certain things I do are ‘spiritual’ while others are ‘secular.’

Jesus showed us that everything we do can be done for the glory of God.  For example, the simple act of eating, which does not seem very spiritual, takes on a spiritual meaning when we give thanks for the meal to God, and we share it with others the way Jesus taught.  We praise God by the way we work when we work honest and hard in His name.
