“I have been writing this volume while residing in Germany for a teaching trip. I am humbled by penning these 95 theses in the same country as Martin Luther did many years ago. I submit these to the evangelical church of our day and pray that God would allow anything of truth in these pages to bend and change men’s hearts back to God.” – Greg Gordon –
It is useless for large companies of believers to spend long hours begging God to send revival. Unless we intend to reform we may as well not pray. Unless praying men have the insight and faith to amend their whole way of life to conform to the New Testament pattern there can be no true revival. – A.W. Tozer
I am currently reviewing and commenting on 95 theses to the modern evangelical church “revised”! by Greg Gordon. The following discusses self sacrifice.
The modern day evangelical finds Jesus’ command to sacrifice and serve abhorrent.
James 3:16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
Romans 12:1-2 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
It have another verse I would add to this… Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. (Mark 8.34). Following Christ comes with a cost, though you will not hear much about that in churches or many Christian books today. Most sermons and books come across as self-help more than anything else. Phrases like “To your own self be true”, “What have you done for me lately”, and “Love yourself” stand opposed to the lessons Jesus taught in the Word.
Only by losing ourselves (in service to God and others) will we find ourselves. Mat 10.39 says, “Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”
By His Grace,
