“I have been writing this volume while residing in Germany for a teaching trip. I am humbled by penning these 95 theses in the same country as Martin Luther did many years ago. I submit these to the evangelical church of our day and pray that God would allow anything of truth in these pages to bend and change men’s hearts back to God.” – Greg Gordon –
It is useless for large companies of believers to spend long hours begging God to send revival. Unless we intend to reform we may as well not pray. Unless praying men have the insight and faith to amend their whole way of life to conform to the New Testament pattern there can be no true revival. – A.W. Tozer
I am currently reviewing and commenting on 95 theses to the modern evangelical church “revised” by Greg Gordon. The following discusses false gospels.
There are many false gospels being preached from pulpits. God has no interest and is not required to honor a gospel that is false.
2 Corinthians 11:4 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
Galatians 1:8-9 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!
Jude 16 These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.
This thesis piggy backs on the one above, and those comments apply here. Many will say “Lord, Lord” and He will say, “I know you not.” That chills me and motivates me to continuously seek out the face of Jesus to insure that I do not follow a false gospel.
The second line in this thesis is super important. Many people I speak to think that if you believe in something hard enough, God will allow you into heaven even if you believe in a false Gospel. Consider that a number of major religions such as Judism and Islam which do not even believe that in the deity of Jesus. So many think that all of them will make it into Heaven. Jesus, however, made it crystal clear that those who do not have faith in Him cannot enter the Kingdom.
There is an epidemic of a sort of ‘mock salvation’ being preached from many pulpits today. It is a gospel message that is not authentic. It is correct in doctrine but false in reality.
2 Corinthians 3:6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
1 John 5:11-12 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Romans 8:9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ
We have countless churches, many of with hundreds or thousands of congregants. Yet, the vast majority of the people who attend live no different than their non-churched counterparts. We hear disturbing statistics such as how divorce rates in church are no different than outside of it. How can this be possible where we teach, preach and live the Word of God?
We must teach great theology, but without the love of God and love for God, the correct theologies mean little. The book of James makes it quite clear. If your faith does not result in works of God, and a Holy life, you live a dead faith.
What is this ‘mock salvation’ that is being spoken of? Simply defined, it is a salvation that does not make men holy.
Jude 4 For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about[b] long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.
Romans 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,
Romans 6:17-18 But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
I have a number of friends who believe in a gospel message. Yet, they do not live holy lives as result. You may know a few people like this around you.
As I wrote in the introduction, I look at each of these thesis against the modern, evangelical church, and I apply them to myself. I ask myself this question about my own walk as I get older. I like to think I know a lot of correct theology. But, am I walking closer to God as a result? Am I living a more Holy life? Do I love Him more and more? If not, I do not live and preach an authentic Gospel.
By His Grace,
