The journey of a nerd who loves the Lord

“I have been writing this volume while residing in Germany for a teaching trip. I am humbled by penning these 95 theses in the same country as Martin Luther did many years ago. I submit these to the evangelical church of our day and pray that God would allow anything of truth in these pages to bend and change men’s hearts back to God.” – Greg Gordon –

It is useless for large companies of believers to spend long hours begging God to send revival. Unless we intend to reform we may as well not pray. Unless praying men have the insight and faith to amend their whole way of life to conform to the New Testament pattern there can be no true revival. – A.W. Tozer

I am currently reviewing and commenting on  95 theses to the modern evangelical church “revised” by Greg Gordon.  The following discusses false gospels and leadership.

Thesis 43

Run from gospels that focus only on self-improvement.

1 Timothy 6:5 and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.

Hebrews 12:14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

James 4:14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.

The first passage here hits close to home.  In Utah, as in many parts of the nation, we are surrounded by religions that teach that acting “godly” somehow equates to knowing God, and holiness.  Now, some blatant pastors teach that knowing Jesus will give you your best life now.  From promising riches and good health, to making self empowering statements repeatedly, these preachers falsely lead, and end up condemning people to hell.  Other, more sinister approaches, emphasize a life without liquor, TV, etc.  While that appears a ‘good’ way to live and please God, pursuing these avenues as a means to salvation and holiness, in and of themselves, often leads to prideful, hypocritical religion, as shown by the Pharisees.

Thesis 44

Run from churches where men and not Christ are gloried.

Colossians 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

Jude 25 to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

John 16:14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

I touched on this already, a few pages ago.  We exist to glorify God, plain and simple.

I spoke with a brother who stated, “I cannot imagine heaven without my family.  What would be the point?”  I showed him several passages that made it clear that we will not have spouses, or traditional marriage relationships in heaven.  “Then, what would be the purpose?  What would you look forward to?”

I explained that Jesus came into my life.  While I lived a life of sin, Jesus bled and died for me.  I love Jesus very much because He first loved me.  In heaven, I explained, I look forward to worshipping and glorifying Him for all eternity.

If your heart does not point in that direction, check the messages you listen to.  Go back to the Bible, in prayer.  To God be the glory!

Thesis 45

Run from churches where there is no Bible, no cross, no searching Word, no repentance from sin, no mention of the blood of Christ.

1 Peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

Ephesians 3:13 So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you, which is your glory.

Revelation 1:5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood

I cannot remember a time where I, personally, witnessed a tragedy on this level.  However, major church organization which claim to follow Jesus, do fall into these patterns.  Be wary of any such organization, and keep your distance, unless God directs you there.
