The journey of a nerd who loves the Lord

“I have been writing this volume while residing in Germany for a teaching trip. I am humbled by penning these 95 theses in the same country as Martin Luther did many years ago. I submit these to the evangelical church of our day and pray that God would allow anything of truth in these pages to bend and change men’s hearts back to God.” – Greg Gordon –

It is useless for large companies of believers to spend long hours begging God to send revival. Unless we intend to reform we may as well not pray. Unless praying men have the insight and faith to amend their whole way of life to conform to the New Testament pattern there can be no true revival. – A.W. Tozer

I am currently reviewing and commenting on  95 theses to the modern evangelical church “revised” by Greg Gordon.  The following discusses God’s plan for your life.

Thesis 55

In result thousands of sinners think of God having only one attribute, love! which has allowed multitudes to sit at ease with their sins.

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

Acts 5:11 And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.

Psalm 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled.  Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

The last few theses lead up to this point  We have millions who believe God is love, but nothing else.  They even use this viewpoint to justify practices that the Bible clearly denounces.

To say “God is love” and go no further is to describe an elephant as “long and stringy” after feeling his tail.  While that statement is accurate, it is also incomplete.  The Bible shows God as having many characteristics, including Holiness.  God’s Holiness demands that he carry out justice, ultimately, to all who refuse to follow Him and live in sinful rebellion.

Thesis 56

God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life has caused much confusion in evangelism to the lost.

Romans 3:19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.

Acts 26:18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

Philippians 3:18-21 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

We continue to carry on the line of thinking from earlier entries.  By emphasizing God’s “love” and de-emphasizing His Holiness, we have created many false converts and much confusion in our churches today.

Thesis 57

A Gospel of love and grace only without the law of God is being preached. Martin Luther called this gospel a doctrine of Satan.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound[a] teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

Romans 2:4-5 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgement will be revealed.

Romans 3:19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.

Somehow, in our culture, we have come to the believe that to love means to accept someone completely as they are, with no rules or regulations.  That not only flies in the face of what the Bible teaches, it also defies logic.

Even in the most liberal of relationships, guidelines exist to maintain some order.  Love cannot grow in an environment where those involved act selfishly, bringing pain to those they profess to love.  Love also demands our best by putting the other person first.

While not all of God’s laws may make sense to the masses, rest assured that God knows that which we do not understand.  By following His Word, we will walk more closely in love with our Creator, and with each other.
