The journey of a nerd who loves the Lord

“I have been writing this volume while residing in Germany for a teaching trip. I am humbled by penning these 95 theses in the same country as Martin Luther did many years ago. I submit these to the evangelical church of our day and pray that God would allow anything of truth in these pages to bend and change men’s hearts back to God.” – Greg Gordon –

It is useless for large companies of believers to spend long hours begging God to send revival. Unless we intend to reform we may as well not pray. Unless praying men have the insight and faith to amend their whole way of life to conform to the New Testament pattern there can be no true revival. – A.W. Tozer

I am currently reviewing and commenting on  95 theses to the modern evangelical church “revised” by Greg Gordon.  The following discusses salvation, hell and the judgement seat.

Thesis 61

Men have taken the place of the Holy Spirit of God in confirming men in their supposed salvation.

1 John 2:3-5 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him:

2 Thessalonians 1:8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

Galatians 6:12-15 It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13 For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. 14 But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which[a] the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.

A pastor yelling “You have been saved” after you say a prayer borders on blasphemy.  The Bible says tha only God knows the heart of men.  I believe that the passage, “Judge not lest ye be judged” applies to judging whether others will go to heaven or hell.  Only Jesus gets that honor.

Thesis 62

The doctrine of hell and eternal suffering is something little grasped by most evangelicals.

Matthew 13:42 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

James 5:1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.

Psalms 9:17 The wicked shall return to Sheol, all the nations that forget God.

Never a popular topic, old school evangelists used the message of hell (and fear of it), to really drive home the need to come to Jesus.  Jesus, himself, spoke more on hell than heaven.  We have lost sight of the fact that many, many people who die every single day will end up in Hell.  We must never forget this, and use that concern to fuel our desire to pray and preach for the lost.

Thesis 63

The judgment seat of Christ is perhaps one of the most neglected topics in the modern evangelical pulpit.

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Romans 14:10 Why do you pass judgement on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgement seat of God;

1 Corinthians 3:13 each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.

As I mentioned above, we will all appear before Christ, to be judged.  Those who did not accept Christ as their Lord will find eternal torment waiting for them.  Because this topic is so vital, pastors should discuss it often, yet, rarely do you hear about the judgment, or Bema seat.

We will be judged, in front of God, after this life.  This thought should help to guide our actions and our lives.  We will have to give an account for what we have done, and what we have not done.  In my opinion, this thesis here ranks in the top 10 of this entire exercise.  Let us prepare and not find our Lord waiting on the day of His return.
