The journey of a nerd who loves the Lord

“I have been writing this volume while residing in Germany for a teaching trip. I am humbled by penning these 95 theses in the same country as Martin Luther did many years ago. I submit these to the evangelical church of our day and pray that God would allow anything of truth in these pages to bend and change men’s hearts back to God.” – Greg Gordon –

It is useless for large companies of believers to spend long hours begging God to send revival. Unless we intend to reform we may as well not pray. Unless praying men have the insight and faith to amend their whole way of life to conform to the New Testament pattern there can be no true revival. – A.W. Tozer

I am currently reviewing and commenting on  95 theses to the modern evangelical church “revised” by Greg Gordon.  The following discusses church structure and culture.

Thesis 76

The prayer meeting is considered in the evangelical church one of the least important meetings. The idea of meeting for an entire day together seems ridiculous and a waste of time.

1 Timothy 2:1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,

Acts 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

Philippians 4:6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Admittedly, the idea of praying for an entire day is something I could never wrap my head around.  So, if this indictment rings true, it does so for me.  I do try and pray multiple times each day, and I work to thing up the things of God as often as possible.  Ultimately, I would love to focus my thoughts, and pray to God internally, for a long period of time.

Thesis 77

Pastors have never prayed less than they do in the evangelical church in our day.

Jeremiah 10:21 For the shepherds are stupid and do not enquire of the Lord; therefore they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered.

Philippians 2:21 For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 6:18-19 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel,

Prayers in public gathers tend to run shorter lengths, including church.  Honestly, I feel that given the fact that most church gathers consist of both those who have faith, and those who do not, the shorter times work.  A separate invitation for the saints to pray on a deeper level for longer periods of time would work better, unless your church consists of all Christians (which my suggested, smaller model, would probably consist of just those who follow Christ).

Thesis 78

Very few are waiting on God for His direction and purpose for the church.

Ephesians 1:11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,

Psalm 37:7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!

Isaiah 40:31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

I have seen churches spring up and grow like daisies.  I have also seen them die just as quickly.  Whether or not the people waited on God’s direction before moving forward, I could not say.  However, I would never argue the wisdom of doing just that.
