“I have been writing this volume while residing in Germany for a teaching trip. I am humbled by penning these 95 theses in the same country as Martin Luther did many years ago. I submit these to the evangelical church of our day and pray that God would allow anything of truth in these pages to bend and change men’s hearts back to God.” – Greg Gordon –
It is useless for large companies of believers to spend long hours begging God to send revival. Unless we intend to reform we may as well not pray. Unless praying men have the insight and faith to amend their whole way of life to conform to the New Testament pattern there can be no true revival. – A.W. Tozer
I am currently reviewing and commenting on 95 theses to the modern evangelical church “revised” by Greg Gordon. The following continues discussion on antinominism.
The Apostles and Christ always preached from the vantage point of the possibility to walk holy and free from sin.
Titus 2:11-12 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
1 Peter 1:14-16 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Romans 6:19 I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.
This just further cements the point made on the last page. By the power of the Spirit, we can absolutely have freedom and power over the devil, and sin, in our lives.
Sinners are not saved to sin but rather saved to holiness and good works.
Romans 6:13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
2 Peter 3:14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.
The Bible makes clear that Jesus’ death on the cross not only paved the way to life eternal, but also a means to have victory over sin in our lives. We are to glorify Him in the way we live by following His Holy ways and avoiding sin at every turn.
Cheap grace means the justification of sin without the justification of the sinner. Cheap grace is the deadly enemy of the church.
2 Timothy 2:19 But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his”, and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
1 Peter 4:17-18 For it is time for judgement to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”
2 Timothy 3:12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
The idea that when we accept Christ that our sin becomes justified (Because Jesus forgives it), but that we, ourselves, do not step out of sin, simply does not originate in scripture. The blood certainly washes away our sins, but it washes us, the sinners, in the process, leaving us a spotless lamb, free of sin.
