“I have been writing this volume while residing in Germany for a teaching trip. I am humbled by penning these 95 theses in the same country as Martin Luther did many years ago. I submit these to the evangelical church of our day and pray that God would allow anything of truth in these pages to bend and change men’s hearts back to God.” – Greg Gordon –
It is useless for large companies of believers to spend long hours begging God to send revival. Unless we intend to reform we may as well not pray. Unless praying men have the insight and faith to amend their whole way of life to conform to the New Testament pattern there can be no true revival. – A.W. Tozer
I am currently reviewing and commenting on 95 theses to the modern evangelical church “revised” by Greg Gordon. The following concludes the series.
If Christianity is to make any headway in the present time it must be proved to be more than a theory.
2 Thessalonians 3:6-7 Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you,
1 Thessalonians 4:1 Finally, then, brothers,[a] we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more.
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, 12 so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.
This goes back to allowing our light before men. Jesus commands us to love one another. When we do that, giving and serving selflessly and living a blameless life, people see all of our theories and theologies in a real, practical way. Jesus demonstrated that kind of life and light. We simply cannot find that today. Certainly we can find people (though various denominations and cults) who seem to live a ‘holy’ life, but people have a way to see through that kind of hypocrisy. Self righteous behavior steeped in a selfish ambition does nothing to put Christ on display. We must demonstrate a practical application, by our daily living, of His love and kindness.
Unbelief has us captive; the evangelical church is gagged and bound as risen Lazarus it needs release in this final hour!
Hebrews 3:12-14 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today”, that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.
1 Corinthians 3:21-23 So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, 23 and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.
Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Ok… that Lazarus reference has me a bit baffled, but the point is valid. As many of the points in this book demonstrate, as a church, we completely lack faith in the methods, theology, commands and power of God. We lack faith in even the most basic precepts, and believe ourselves powerless to our old enemy, sin. And, without faith, we will never draw close to God or experience holiness, victory or power as a church.
Phew! There you have it! All 95 Thesis with scriptures and thoughts. I do have one more post with my concluding thoughts on this series. Stay tuned!
